A young country with long-shifting borders, Romania is reconnecting with a prestigious past. Soils marked by diverse cultural influences—dating back to Antiquity—formed the foundation for great wines. These were lost to phylloxera, two world wars, and the era of communist mass-produced wine. Quietly, convincing and uninhibited wines are once again being crafted, aiming to make their mark in a westward conquest of their own.
Indeed, this land, always well-suited to vines, entered a period of revitalising dynamism when it joined the European Union. Supported by foreign investment and winemakers, it is now entering a new phase of distinctly Romanian development, both in terms of ownership structures and viticultural know-how.

Romania Unveils Its Strengths

Romanian Wine by the Numbers

With 4.5 million hectolitres produced (11th worldwide), an average consumption of 15 litres of wine per person per year, and only 3% exported, the 2023 statistics speak volumes. The cultivated area is shrinking: from 242,700 hectares in 2002—roughly the same as Chile’s vineyard area—it fell to 187,000 hectares by 2023, ranking 8th globally. A few large estates exist, but there’s a growing trend of smaller-scale ventures, reflecting a sector in transformation.

A Key Word: Diversity

Romania boasts dramatic landscapes—from the Carpathians to the Black Sea—dense forests home to bears, scattered with castles and monasteries that inspire legend. Mountainous hills give way to cereal plains, while the Danube’s branches and its delta cradle the nation in rich biodiversity. The hospitality is warm and spontaneous, imbued with Latin festivity. A tranquil calm prevails, a surprising contrast to the bustle of Western Europe.

In the land of the Dacians, successive waves of rule—Greco-Roman, Germanic, Austro-Hungarian, Ottoman—have created a layered viticultural culture without territorial unity. This complexity is its strength, feeding a culture of blending: of grape varieties, techniques, and mindsets. It gives rise today to new tastes and undeniable freshness. Romania, long absent from the global stage of fine wine, is now making its intentions known.

Rebuilding the Vineyards

The 1990s marked a turning point. Large state-run production units were auctioned off. Everything had to be rebuilt. The country caught the eye of renowned expert Hugh Johnson, captivated by its terroirs. The first to follow him were a few adventurous Europeans: pioneer Guy de Poix, Petro Vaselo, Olivier Bauer, Denis Thomas.
In 2005, the government recognised wine as a strategic product, a step taken by the Ministry of Agriculture and Foreign Trade. A strategic plan was developed to promote quality through designations of origin (DOC) and geographical indications (IG) following the European model. Romania also began to specialise in its native grape varieties, aiming to combine “technology with tradition rooted in the country” (as promoted at Prowein, Düsseldorf).

When Romania joined the European Union on 1st January 2007, 45% of the population still lived from subsistence farming. A massive transformation began—replacing ageing infrastructure, poor-quality bulk wines, and outdated distribution systems. EU funding—more than €40 million annually—helped modernise equipment and technology and improve viticultural expertise. French, Italian, German, Austrian and Hungarian winemakers and investors followed suit.

A Wealth of Terroirs

Lying on the same latitude as the world’s finest vineyards—the famed 45th parallel—Romania is blessed with sunshine, fertile land, varied soils, and favourable climates. Around fifty recognised appellations confirm its potential.

Transylvania, with its legendary plateau, is home to famed terroirs such as Dealu Mare (DOC), “the great hill”. The region’s renewal began here, in sub-Carpathian valleys criss-crossed by rivers, where vines have always thrived. In 1994, Corsican count Guy de Poix, enchanted by a fetească neagră, invested in the first private winery, Serve. Nearby Mizil, other major estates emerged. Davino, a benchmark for varietal purity, began in 2003 on 87 hectares, producing bold, Bordeaux-style wines. Austrian Walter Friedl created Lacerta: 82 replanted hectares, €8 million invested. The Tuscan Antinori family, global investors, established Viile Metamorfosis: 100 hectares restoring the region’s typicity and grape potential. Denis Thomas’ Franco-Romanian Estates (DFR) in the same region combined traditional methods with modern technology.
Later, Budureasca, one of the largest producers (275 ha), embraced ultra-modern equipment and an avant-garde winery, branding with the image of Dacian king Decebal. In the north, ancient vineyards are being revived in DOC Lechinta by Liliac and Jelna Wines, blending dry white traditions with increasingly subtle reds.

To the west near Timisoara, Serbian Petro Vaselo reintroduced vines to Banat from 2002.

The Tarnave plateau attracted investors like German Oberrauch at Villa Vinea. Founded in 1949 and privatised 50 years later, Jidvei modernised extensively around a medieval castle. It is now the largest wine producer in Romania and Europe, with 2,500 hectares and €100 million invested. Its fetească albă compares favourably with international counterparts.

In Romanian Moldova—one-third of the national vineyard—sweet, raisined wines like those from Cotnari have long enjoyed European fame. Casa de Vinuri here fuses tradition (only native grapes) with cutting-edge technology over 350 hectares.

The sunny Dobrogea plateau, stretching to the Danube Delta and the Black Sea, boasts fertile soil and a maritime climate. Alira (since 2006) and Murfatlar built its Bordeaux-inspired reputation.

Guy de Poix quickly noticed the terroir’s “quite impressive” complexity (RFI, 2008). The Transylvanian black soil, or chernozem, rich in humus, “needs almost no fertiliser,” says Ovidiu Maxim of Turda. Near Bistrita, volcanic soils with high alkaline pH “activate mineral cations interestingly, giving energy,” explains Darius Pripon of Jelna. Everything is in place to rebuild vineyards and produce quality wines.

Photographs © Florence Monferran

Between the Mediterranean and the Black Sea, the Balkans emerge onto the European wine scene.A breeze of freshness and technical mastery blows over millennia-old traditions.
